ISSUE #20

They came to The Art House Joshua Tree from all over, braving 100 degree heat and miles of bumpy, unpaved desert roads, on a whim and a few lines in a catalogue, to share their stories and eat ice cream with a stranger.

The most incredible, heartbreaking, inspiring, exhausting weekend!

I've nothing but awe and gratitude for this wonderful group of new friends.

Thank you, thank you!

OTHER NEWS

Earlier this month I was honored to be selected as a winner in Hettie Judahs Acts of Creation / North America Competition for my work Mothers Milk 2010. This previously unshown piece is one of many works I created in response to motherhood.

It was difficult to revisit these works.

When I made this image I was in my 40's with two boys under two. We were living in London. Harry was away for work almost constantly for three years and I felt completely alone. I had crippling post natal depression but I didn't share it with anyone.

Throughout my art practice I have used performance style self portraiture to explore and articulate the unspeakable. So it was natural to continue that practice through miscarriage, my pregnancy, and the early years of motherhood, but it was such a difficult time that I rarely share the work. I wanted so badly to breastfeed but it was terribly painful. The milk formula became a symbol of all the rage and frustration and fear I felt.

I didn't make it to my studio for over a year but I made work whenever I could at home. I used the materials I had to hand in the home, toys, milk, dirty nappies, playdough, pastry, finger paints etc.

Hettie has been advocating for and sharing a community of brilliant artist mothers in her book Acts of Creation and in her fantastic exhibition of the same name. Please check them out and support the work of artist mothers.

THE ART HOUSE JOSHUA TREE

The Art House Joshua Tree is our home away from home, surrounded by 100's of miles of uninterrupted views of the Mojave desert. We created this space to escape from the day to day and to slow down and be inspired.

The house is a creative retreat and artist residency. Every year we host one or two select workshops. This is the third year Yan Palmer and Ryan Muirhead have held their wonderful film photography workshop with us.

There will be lots more images on our instagram as everyones films come back from the lab but I couldn't wait to share these behind the scenes by Jennifer Magnuson
